Byner says companies like to appear to be good corporate citizens, but that the truth is often different. Kellie Northwood says large companies told them they could not afford the postage and print costs of allowing consumers the right to choose how they are billed. They then found bills would cost the companies about 88c, while customers are being charged up to $3.20 to receive paper bills. Byner suggests it is nothing but profiteering.

She says the danger of digital fraud is that it is not immediately apparent and can last for years. Byner says the theory is that the free market is competitive, but that the companies all copy one another.
